Penistone Church A-A Steels Reserves

The game between Steels Reserves and Penistone Church was abandoned in the latter stages of the first half due to an injury sustained by Luca Defalco.

The game itself began in a lively fashion, Penistone played with a high press which eventually lead to the only goal of the game – Penistone’s Ryan Hallsworth chasing down a Steel’s back pass and blocking Matt King’s clearance, the ball rolled across onto the penalty spot where Jack Roberts fired the ball into the back of the net.

Penistone tried their luck from early on, Matt King must’ve been getting cold hands as he slightly fumbled a low effort from the hosts, but not enough to cause any panic.

The Steels’ number 9 replied and registered the visitor’s first effort on goal, after holding off the defender he couldn’t quite direct the shot to the desired destination, and the host’s keeper managed to get a foot to the low shot.

Stocksbridge again tested the hosts resolve, Luca Defalco’s powerful shot on goal had the keeper pinned to the spot, but it cannoned off a lime green shirt and earned the Steel’s a corner.

Penistone had their first real bite of the cherry as the ball was cut back from the byline for Jack Moore who couldn’t keep his shot down as it sailed straight over the bar.

The referee knew he was to have a fiesty game on his hands after Penistone’s Ryan Hallsworth seemed to go down in the Steel’s box, prompting strong appeals which were waved away by the referee. It was a wonder no cards were issued following the confrontation between the two sets of players as a result of the penalty appeal.

The players were visibly charged up, and even more determined to draw first blood, the events which had occurred minutes before gave the game the cutting edge it needed to do exactly that. The home side took the lead in the S36 derby following some tenacious closing down from Ryan Hallsworth, and a grateful Jack Roberts who couldn’t believe his luck.

However, in the moments leading up to half time Steels’ star Luca Defalco appeared to fall to the ground having sustained a serious knee injury. Not long after this it was decided that the game would be abandoned.

We wish for a speedy recovery for Luca.
