Managers Notes – Widnes

Richards programme notes

We provide a warm welcome to all those connected to Widnes FC for today’s game at the Eco Power Stadium. They come into this game in great form after beating Brighouse Town in the last round of the FA Trophy. As we know too well, Brighouse are a strong outfit, so we need to be at our best to progress to the next round.

Football can change very quickly, after 3 excellent results in our first 3 games, we lost two games in three days. We are always performance and process driven so even though bitterly disappointed with both results, there were a lot of positives to take from the games. On another day if we’d been more clinical in converting our chances and had been on the right side of some extremely dubious refereeing decisions, we’d have gained at least 4 points across the 3 days. There were a large number of positives to take from both games. We also know there are a number things to improve, which we continue to do so together as a group.

We now have all the players fit and with minutes under their belts, therefore competition for places is high. This can only be a good thing if the players understand that it takes a squad to achieve success and not just an 11. To add to this further, we have signed Jack Tinker, a young full back from Brighouse Town. He is quick, athletic, strong in the tackle and likes to join in attacks, so we hope he can add further quality to an already strong squad.

As previously mentioned in my programme notes, thank you for the warm positive welcome Andy, Pete and I have received since joining, it is great to see a positive atmosphere in the stands and clubhouse. We hope we can work together as a club to continue to move forward and have a successful season on and off the pitch, making sure the last two results are quickly forgotten.
Enjoy the game,
Ian
